The start of an owl obsession
If you don't already know, Ainsley is my little owl baby. It all started when I decided that owls would be the theme of the nursery and thus the theme of my shower. I wanted to paint a tree in the nursery, so what better animal to go in the tree than an owl? It was a fun gender neutral theme since we didn't know whoooooo baby Ulstad was going to be. (I'll do another post on the nursery in the future). I also didn't know to what extent people were going to carry out the owl theme. My mom and sister made everything from the diaper cakes to cupcakes into owls and almost every gift Ainsley received before and after she was born had an owl somewhere on it. Sure it helps that owls are ubber trendy these days, but still, the amount of owl paraphernalia we received was outrageous. Here are some pictures of the cute owl shower stuff:
And so with October 31st being just a few days short of Ainsley turning 4 months old, I just HAD to have her be an owl for Halloween. But, of course, I only came up with the idea 2 weeks before the holiday. And, of course, I was going to make her costume...
I got my inspiration from Pinterest and blogs like these: http://www.themomcreative.com/2012/09/no-sew-owl-costume-tutorial.html and http://rebeccalundin.com/2011/10/399/
And since I'm a knitter and not a crocheter (?) I knit the hat using a basic ear flap hat pattern (like this one) and then added the ears, nose and eyes afterwards. Unfortunately, I still had to crochet the eyes. I hate crocheting and would love someone to help me with it cause I just can't seem to get it right. Regardless, I think the hat came out OK - not perfect, but good enough for the costume. I made it on the bigger side, so she grew into it and it ended up being our go-to hat for the whole winter. I got a ton of compliments on it too, but I'm pretty sure that was more because of the baby underneath than my knitting/crocheting skills.
The rest of the costume I did with a hot glue gun, lots of felt and pretty-colored feathers. Oh and of course, I threw on the tutu underneath. This is a little progress photo that shows the body of the costume better than my posed staged below.

So bringing us to present day, you can see why her first and favorite word other than Mama and Dada is owl. It's all I hear all day long: "OOOWWWLL, OWL, OWL!" It's so cute I can't stand it. I'll write more about this when I write about the nursery, but at least you now have the background story of her owl obsession!
